WATER FEATURES: BIRDBATHS, ZEN POOLS,
REFLECTION POOLS, AND FOUNTAINS
note: Re birdbaths, we have learned through observation that birds
prefer shallower pools. We accommodate by making
them fairly shallow. If you buy a pool that, after a while, you suspect is
too deep, put a little rock(s) in it for the birds to stand on.
We use different names. We call our bigger and deeper pools "Zen Pools."
We try to mimic nature with these. Often they have a "mountain" with the pool. We call
our very largest pools "Reflection
Pools." Smaller pools are "Birdbaths" or "Garden Pools." Of course, these are just names.

A hole can be drilled into any one of these garden pools to
turn it into a fountain, as was done in the greenstone pool below.

|
A variation on a theme: planters can also be made. Holes are drilled in the
bottom for drainage. This one made from a naturally-rounded concretion.

Large Polished Garden Stones -- Minimalist

make one of these stones a statement, a center piece, a

Feature Stones for Landscape
We save large boulders that have some quality that makes
them attractive yard stones. Some, like the Aphrodite and Jupiter Marble, have
beautiful water-worn shapes. Some, like the Circus Conglomerate, have dynamic
colors. Some are muted in color which may well suit Japanese-styled
gardens. We have a few boulders that have natural dips or bowls that hold water
after a rain, that are water holes for wildlife. We like moss, which is abundant
on some of our stones.
Also, when we saw a boulder for table tops, we retain the butt
ends for feature landscape stones. Placing the sawn, flat end down, the
remainder of the stone looks like the top of a natural rock outcrop. Such can add great beauty and interest
to a yard. |
